Organisational & Workforce Development

Training & Skills

Carbon reduction and sustainability awareness should be a routine part of the training and development process for Boards. Organisations such as the NHS Appointments Commission have an important opportunity to develop this commitment.

A range of organisations offer training for staff, ranging from an introductions to sustainability to environmental management systems. A few key organisations in the region are listed in the 'need some help' section.

Learning for Sustainability is something that can be inegrated into the everyday working of the Trust and all staff. From including carbon reduction and sustainability in inductions and job desciptions, to understanding the value of sustainability in everyday practice.

Case Studies

In 2008 the Renal unit at Royal Cornwall Hospital Truro took part in a climate change and carbon reduction initiative.  From it flowed a short list of immediate actions, and some longer term actions both to improve the service and cut carbon.  Some of the easiest actions such as a 70% reduction in linen use, and reducing food waste from 35% to near zero, also resulted in immediate savings of carbon, and c£8k cash, more than paying for the programme.
