Water Easy Wins

  • Conduct a water use survey to update current water needs, particularly as medical processes and methods are constantly upgrading and therefore may change water needs.
  • Check regularly for dripping taps and leaking toilets
  • Ensure all staff know who to contact if they come across a dripping tap etc
  • Use full loads in sanitisers, dishwashers, sterilisers and washing machines.
  • Install automatic values on film processing equipment to stop water flow when not in use.
  • Recycle steam condensate and non contact water from sterilisers to make-up water in cooling towers or boilers. Recycle brine from reverse osmosis or filter backwash for cooling.
  • Investigate replacing the single pass cooling systems used typically in ice machines, x-rays, CAT scanners, air conditioners etc with closed loop systems or reusing the water elsewhere.
  • Install flow control fixtures where possible
  • Harvest rainwater (from rooftops.)
  • Use domestic efficiency techniques to reduce water consumption – fit water-efficient and aerated taps, low flush toilets etc
