Travel & Transport

Active Travel

Active travel is a way of positively promoting more ‘energetic’ forms of travel, such as walking and cycling, while at the same time reducing sedentary travel, particularly car travel.

Promoting active travel will help to decrease the reliance on car travel, and also increase the health and well being of staff, visitors and patients.

Active Travel will help to reduce carbon emissions from car transport by providing the mechanism for staff and visitors to choose low carbon options like walking and cycling. There are also many more benefits to be had, both for the individual and the community.  Daily walking or cycling can prevent coronary heart disease, strokes and cancers and can tackle the worrying rise in obesity and mental health issues. People who travel to work by bicycle or on foot are more likely to have more energy, be more focussed and have fewer day off due to illness.

Organisations such as Sustrans can help you to develop active travel plans, including helping you find ways of developing better walking and cycling routes and helping people to feel more comfortable about getting out of their cars and on to a bicycle or their feet!
