Travel & Transport

The NHS accounts for 5% of all road traffic in England and travel is responsible for 18% of the NHS carbon footprint.

These key points highlight how important it is for NHS organisations to become exemplars in leading the population-wide shift from sedentary travel to more active travel such as walking, cycling and public transport. Promoting better travel also supports the research evidence and policy call by many organisations to improve health.

All Trusts should implement the NICE guidance on physical activity and the environment promoting active travel options and providing incentives for staff to choose low carbon travel options.

This section provides information to support a shift to low carbon travel, with helpful hints, template active and green travel plans, best practice examples and a list of useful resources.

Active travel is a way of positively promoting more ‘energetic’ forms of travel, such as walking and cycling, while at the same time reducing sedentary travel, particularly car travel.

How staff, patients and visitors travel to and from NHS services has a huge impact on the organisation’s carbon footprint and the health of the individual.

All NHS organisations should Board approved and corporately implemented sustainable travel plans, a key component of all sustainable development and carbon reduction plans.
