New analysis of research conducted in partnership with the National Obesity Observatory and Sustrans, shows the impact an increase in cycling has had on public health - with a 10% reduction in the number of people classified as physically inactive.

IDeA - Developing a business case for health improvement

There is a strong moral argument why local authorities and their partners work to improve the heath of their communities and to reduce the inequalities gap. But investing in preventative public health also makes sound business sense. The IDeA through the Healthy Communities programme plans to support the sector to understand where efficiency savings can be achieved and how to realise them. It is currently asking local authorities and partnerships to work with them to trial this theory in practice.

Better buildings and spaces improve quality of life, says the public

Nearly nine out of ten people say that better quality buildings and public spaces improve their quality of life, according to new MORI research published by CABE on its tenth anniversary.

The current risk is that public spending cuts to non-statutory council services, like parks management and maintenance, lead to places becoming dirtier and shabbier, with key targets like community safety and obesity being missed as a result.
