Asthma Inhaler Recycling Extended

GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) has rolled out its respiratory inhaler recycling scheme to community pharmacies across the country following successful trials. The scheme, Complete the Cycle, is run in partnership with TerraCycle UK and was piloted earlier this year in selected branches of The Co-operative Pharmacy. The initiative is just one of the steps GSK is taking to meet its target of having zero waste to landfill by 2020.

People in the south west of England are the most enthusiastic recyclers in the country, according to the latest opinion poll. Friends of the Earth's new regional recycling league table evaluated people's attitudes to recycling at home and in the workplace and put all the regions in order of how much they love to recycle. The south west topped the poll with 77% saying they recycle even if it requires extra effort.

Reporting on Sustainability Framework (SDU)

Improving the sustainability of the NHS and reducing the NHS carbon footprint has the benefit of saving money. That's the reason why the NHS SDU and the Department of Health have developed an innovative new framework which will help the NHS report on sustainability. The framework will be included in the annual reports of NHS organisations, as part of the process of making the NHS more financially and environmentally sustainable. It will be voluntary for 2010/11 accounts but will be mandatory from 2011/12 onwards. For more information visit the SDU website.

Free Battery Recycling at Torbay Care Trust

Battery Back at Torbay Care Trust

Torbay Care Trust have set up domestic battery recycling with Battery Back, a free service set up in conjunction through NHS Supply Chain under The Waste Batteries and Accumulators Regulations 2009. Battery Back offer three size containers, 5 litres, 60 litres and 120 litres. Torbay Care Trust have implemented the scheme at all Trust sites and GP practices creating 54 drop off points.

Our £17bn waste mountain – the annual bill for throwaway Britain

A new report paints the first complete picture of the scale of the UK’s waste mountain, which hit 18.4million tons last year – at a time when the economy was still struggling to emerge from the longest recession on record.
