15 April is the closing date for the Prime Minister's Better Public Building Award. Public sector clients, architects, project managers, built environment professionals and contractors are invited to enter the 2010 Prime Minister’s Better Public Building Award.

Entries are now open for this year’s Prime Minister’s Better Public Building Award which recognises excellence in both design and procurement. Public sector clients, architects, project managers, built environment professionals and contractors can submit any new project that has helped improve public services. This includes schools, hospitals, libraries, museums, infrastructure projects such as bridges, stations and flood defence schemes, city centre squares and other public spaces. But also smaller projects. Its size and budget do not matter. For more information visit the award website.

UK Government will Lead the Way on Buying Sustainable Timber (20.01.10)

Environment Secretary Hilary Benn today announced that from 1 April 2010 new social criteria will be added to the UK Government’s timber procurement policy, to add to the existing requirement that all Government bought timber is legal and sustainable.

Central Government is estimated to purchase 20 per cent of all timber bought in the UK. This figure rises to 40 per cent when local authorities and other government bodies are included.

This guide describes the obligations that come into force on 1 October 2008 for public authorities and institutions providing public services to a large number of people that occupy buildings (or parts of buildings that have been designed or altered to be used separately) where the total useful floor area of the building (or part that has been designed or altered to be used separately) exceeds 1000m2 and which is frequently visited by the public.
