Fit for the Future is a document which details four future scenarios which give a picture of how health and healthcare in England could differ by 2030. It’s designed to help boards and managers think about long term planning so they are able to turn their commitment to delivering sustainable healthcare into action. The SDU has now produced a resource handbook and a dramatisation of the four scenarios on DVD, which will help facilitators lead a session on this topic. Download the handbooks from the SDU website (see below) and please telephone 01223 596963 for a copy ofthe DVD. The additional resources can be used with groups to work through the scenarios outlined in the ‘Fit for the Future - Scenarios for low-carbon healthcare 2030’ published in September 2009.

Two new documents/guidance notes on sustainable commissioning ave has been sent to all Trusts:  ‘Commissioning for Sustainable Development – a how to guide from commissioners’ from the SDU and Healthy Futures, #9 in the SDC series (includes a case study from NHS Gloucestershire). DH has published its Climate Change Plan, which brings together the pan government carbon reduction and adaptation plans required in the Climate Change Act. The Plan requires non Foundation Trusts to sign up to a Statement of Internal Control, meaning that a Trust has to take into account the requirements of the Climate Change Act and the Civil Contingencies Act in relation to adapting to climate change. DH will make more information available by the end of April/early May. As part of the process of internal control, this information will be summarised in Trust Annual Reports and would ideally be linked to the other areas of work for sustainable development and carbon reduction.
