(From SDU Bulletin) Placing sustainability at the heart of the quality agenda will allow the health system to prosper “tomorrow”. That’s  according to Dr Paul Cosford, interim Director of Health Protection Services at the Health Protection Agency and Dr Justyn Thomas, CMO appointed Clinical Advisor to the Regional Director of Public Health. Writing in the Quality and Safety in Healthcare journal Cosford and Thomas argue that efficient use of resources minimises waste, maximises high-quality healthcare and, in combination, with effectiveness provides the critical measure of productivity. Royal College of GPs postition statement on sustainability and climate change

(From SDC Healthy Futures Update, Autumn 2010) The Royal College of General Practitioners has published its postition statement on sustainability and climate change: "It recognises that the unsustainable use of resources poses a significant challenge to public health in the 21st Century" and it believes that "GPs have a responsibility to promote sustainable development and to show leadership by example in tackling climate change." The Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) has published its position statement on sustainability and climate change. “It recognises that the unsustainable use of resources poses a significant challenge to public health in the 21st Century and that human-induced climate change in particular threatens the long term health and well-being of populations in the UK and globally.” “RCGP believes that GPs have a responsibility to promote sustainable development and to show leadership by example in tackling climate change. The College will seek ways to inform and support GPs in this responsibility and to influence the wider agenda so that this duty can be exercised without financial detriment to GP practices.” Read the full statement here.

Having a Board Approved Sustainable Development Management Plan (SDMP) is one of the cornerstones of the NHS Carbon Reduction Strategy. It supports sustainability and details how the combination of economy, environment and society are not only core to the NHS but also benefit how the NHS is run. The SDU's latest information on SDMPs summarises the policy context, and provides guidance and suggestions to assist NHS organisations to develop an effective SDMP. National Update on SDMPs

Having a Board Approved Sustainable Development Management Plan (SDMP) is one of the corner stones of the NHS Carbon Reduction Strategy and once again underpins the fundamental overlap between Social, Economic and Environmental factors that is core to the NHS. NHS CEO Lead for Sustainable Development, Sir Neil McKay, is keen for the Carbon reduction strategy to be implemented in every region. A map showing the number of SDMPs per region is available on the SDU website - on average 48% of Trusts across England have an SDMP with congratulations to the South West, South Central and Yorks and Humber who had many more.
