GPs on sustainability (from SDU bulletin)

Thu, 12/08/2010

The Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) has published its position statement on sustainability and climate change. “It recognises that the unsustainable use of resources poses a significant challenge to public health in the 21st Century and that human-induced climate change in particular threatens the long term health and well-being of populations in the UK and globally.” “RCGP believes that GPs have a responsibility to promote sustainable development and to show leadership by example in tackling climate change. The College will seek ways to inform and support GPs in this responsibility and to influence the wider agenda so that this duty can be exercised without financial detriment to GP practices.” Read the full statement here.

The Health Practitioner’s Guide to Climate Change

Mon, 01/03/2010

This new book, published at the end of 2009, provides a comprehensive study of the ways in which climate change and health interact and overlap. It begins with a review of the science, including the health services’ contribution to CO2 emissions in the UK, and includes clear recommendations for action on adaptation and on building healthy, sustainable low-carbon communities.  It emphasises the need for partnership working and for collaboration with other professions and groups to amplify the health dimensions of climate change. Although it’s eminently readable from cover to cover, it will also be a useful reference for health professionals and anyone concerned about health policy. For further information visit http://www.earthscan.co.uk/?tabid=74742
