Walkability Test for public services

Fri, 29/01/2010

The Government has been urged to introduce a 'Walkability test' to ensure public services are easily reachable for the population by foot. The consortium – led by the Campaign for Better Transport (CBT) and including the Campaign to Protect Rural England, CTC, Friends of the Earth and Living Streets – also wants the Government to introduce a ‘transport test’ for all new policies so they do not lead to people having to travel further, particularly by car. The ‘walkability test’ could be applicable for all public services, such as post offices, schools and NHS facilities.

Sustainable travel plan interventions - A reference guide for NHS Trusts

This document has been compiled by Sustrans Cymru in order to assist the decision-making phase of the travel planning process and to provide guidance on a range of achievable options. Actions focus on reducing the number of cars with single occupants arriving on site and support a programme to increase the number of more sustainable travel mode trips. Site support vehicles, community transport and delivery vehicle issues are not addressed in this document.
