Carbon Use Indicator Information (17.12.09)

Policy & Guidance

This letter, with information and example Carbon Indicator (CI) was sent by the Department of Health to all NHS organisations to introduce the Carbon Indicator. The CI has been developed to assist Trusts in continuing to identify their wider carbon footprint. It is based upon the format that is now commonly recognised for indicating the energy efficiency of buildings (Energy Performance Certificates EPCs & Display Energy Certificates DECs) or equipment such as white goods.

This first edition is a simple model based upon the carbon dioxide emission equivalents (CO2e) for water, sewage, waste and recycled waste. The recycled waste figure in this model acts as an offset. The model has been developed with the assistance of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), the Environment Agency and other stakeholders, such as the NHS SDU and the Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP). This is to ensure the model continues to improve and reflects the current conversion factors for greenhouse gases.
