The public sector spends more than £2bn every year providing food to public institutions. A Bill calling for mandatory standards to ensure ethically sourced, environmentally friendly, healthy meals in hospitals is due to be discussed on January 21st 2011. Should this Bill be passed, what implications will it have on hospital food providers, NHS catering staff and the patients themselves. Forward Commitment Procurement (FCP) is a way of working with potential suppliers to deliver innovative solutions. This one day session is being delivered by Gaynor Whyles, the UK expert on FCP who will introduce the purpose, practice and principles of FCP as a tool for sustainability, climate change adaptation and efficiency through a mix of presentations, discussions and exercises.

Based on the outcomes of the sustainable procurement task force of the United Nations Marrakech Process, these sessions developed by DEFRA and WRAP provide an introduction to sustainable procurement and help public bodies develop an implementation prioritisation methodology.
With the focus commonly on environmental issues, it is easy to overlook the economic aspects of sustainable procurement. The SWSPN Supply Market Development session aims to address this area by looking at the different types of supply markets, advantages and perceived barriers in developing them and how these markets could be developed.

Energy Saving Week kicks off on October 25th and for five days, homeowners can learn how to save energy and the environment. Run by the Energy Saving Trust, the week will see a series of Q&A sessions by energy experts, waiting to answer questions on issues such as how to generate your own energy to pay as you save schemes and types of double glazing. The world's largest sustainable travel event, The European Mobility Week September 16th to 22nd, focuses on health and mobility with "Travel Smarter, Live Better" as its catchy slogan in 2010. The benefits of active travel on health are well known, people who walk and cycle regularly are fitter, live longer, feel better, and with the cost of fuel once more on the rise, they even save money too. Mobility Week is the perfect occasion to encourage people to give sustainable travel a try, and we are looking for Local Authorities, businesses, schools and universities, hospitals and NHS trusts, community groups and charities to join us in promoting smarter travel this September.
As part of the “Procuring the Future” document, Whole Life Costing helps assess the cost of a procurement from acquisition to disposal. Frequently seen as a complex area, these sessions are designed to show how it can be used in a more easily followed fashion.

The contribution to the local economy from procurement activities is not often measured, but can provide vital evidence of the impact of procurement in a given region. Local multiplier studies can measure this in an easy and straightforward manner.

This is an open online roundtable discussing the opportunities, barriers, policy decisions and technical considerations that might help or hinder a transformation to increasing home healthcare: from telephone appointments to full telecare and telehealth systems. To what extent could home healthcare lead to greater modernisation, efficiency and sustainability in the NHS? The roundtable will be run as a webinar on 2degrees. There are a number of drivers to increase the level of SMEs delivering goods and services to public bodies. The supply market needs to know what is expected of them, in terms of how to bid for contract opportunities and sustainability. These sessions aim to address these issues.
Love Parks Week is an annual campaign, organised by parks charity GreenSpace. Founded in 2006, the campaign has grown steadily and is now established as a major event that is celebrated in parks across the country. Each year hundreds of events take place, attracting extensive media coverage and enabling thousands of people to get out and enjoy their parks.

Team Green Britain Bike Week is the biggest cycling event in the UK with thousands of free activities in villages, towns and cities everywhere. Sustainability is now an essential part of public sector procurement. The South West Sustainable Procurement Network (SWSPN) are pleased to host their first sustainable procurement conference in the South West, aimed at all those in procurement and sustainable development. It will also be of particular relevance to elected members and chief executives who have an interest in ensuring that sustainability issues are included in their organisation's procurement activities, in order to meet their organisational targets.
This conference will share findings and both strategic and practical recommendations from the Sustainable Social Care Programme. The Programme is exploring how sustainable development approaches can help realise the vision of Putting People First and support the improvement and efficiency agenda including CAA. It is a joint initiative by DH and the Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE), with support from the Improvement & Development Agency (IDeA) and the Sustainable Development Commission. This seminar will help to increase the understanding of what makes building materials sustainable. The choice of materials is governed by a host of factors including function, cost, and sustainability. The seminar will help to identify the synergies between these factors and answer questions such as: How does materials choice affect design and how can more sustainable materials enable more sustainable design? What are the links between materials choice and the health of buildings? How can sustainable materials help to protect and enhance historic buildings? World Health Day 2010 will focus on urbanization and health. With the campaign "1000 cities - 1000 lives", events will be organized worldwide calling on cities to open up streets for health activities. Promoting healthy travel for a healthy workforce
This Masterclass will look at good practice across the NHS nationally. It is hosted by Addenbrookes Hospital, which has one of the exemplary travel plans in the UK, and is often cited in national and local media as having the highest parking charges, which are used to fund the excellent projects to enable sustainable accessibility to and from the site. Delegates will have a chance to view the cycle and public transport infrastructure during the day.
The NHS Sustainable Development Unit has a vision of NHS organisations to become an "exemplar in leading the population-wide shift to more active and low carbon travel such as public transport, cycling and walking."
This Masterclass looks at the policies required to bring about this shift, the business case for travel planning for the NHS and the wider health benefits that accrue from healthy travel. It takes place in Cambridge on 29 January from 9.30am - 4.00pm.
This one-day conference will explore How can we create environments that encourage health & well-being? With the growing recognition of the impact of that built environment has on public health, this timely conference brings together built environment and health professionals, academics and policy-makers to share inspirational stories of success and identify how we can all work together more effectively.
