Energy:
- Switch to an energy supply from renewable sources.
- Seek advice from the Carbon Trust
Staff actions:
- Encourage staff to unplug mobile phone chargers when not in use.
- Switch off lights, computer screens and other IT equipment when not in use (especially over night and on weekends)
Lighting, heating & cooling:
- Fit energy-efficient appliances and lightbulbs and monitor and publicise any difference they make
- Purchase energy efficient air conditioning units - this will reduce the amount of energy consumed throughout the life cycle
- Reduce excessive blowdown. Adjust boiler and cooling tower blowdown rate to maintain TDS at levels recommended by manufacturers’ specifications.
- Return steam condensate to the boiler for reuse
- Shut off water cooled air conditioning units when not needed or replace water cooled equipment with air cooled systems
Carbon reduction:
- Follow SDU guidance on carbon and energy reduction measures - many of which are highlighted on this site
- Ensure that carbon reduction is part of the organisational priority and included in all staff job descriptions
- Provide staff training on organisational, local and national sustainable development and climate change strategies - eg. in continuing professional development programmes, staff induction programmes;
