has been another important update to the CRC. The latest simplified guidance from the Environment Agency
highlights the steps required before allowances can be surrendered at the end of
July. Each of the steps depend on the earlier steps being completed and
some of these may take some time so we recommend you complete this by the 16th
July to allow for any delays in the system. Take a look at the summary of steps.
As part of its National Sustainable
Public Procurement Programme, Defra has launched a new e-learning resource for
procurement professionals. The e-learning resource has been developed in
collaboration between Defra, the Department of Health, NHS organisations and the
EU funded Clear About Carbon project. The FREE resource is aimed at staff in
procurement and carbon management and should develop awareness and understanding
of terminology and principles associated with the greenhouse effect and climate
change. Visit the defra website for more info and to access the resource. Then choose unit 9 for procurement.
Powerpoint presentation from Sonia Roschnik, Operational Director from the NHS
Sustainable Development Unit, given at the NHS South West Sustainability Network meeting held in Taunton on 06 September 2011. The presentation covers updates on how sustainability is being embedded in new NHS structures, the Route-Map and how to get invovled and Carbon
NHS Bournemouth and Poole has developed ‘Cutting Carbon and Improving Health’ – a 9 minute video
that explains carbon and the role of the NHS in reduction, for use in staff
inductions. The video is available for all Trusts to use for their staff, and is available on YouTube and Vimeo (click on the name).
Defra has updated its carbon conversion factors - this includes
a decrease in the electricity factor for all years. This is due to a
re-calculation using the international mix of supply. Since we import
electricity from France and they have lower factors (much higher use of nuclear
energy), this has decreased the factor for all years. Visit the defra site for more information.
Proposals to make the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme simpler, easier and more straightforward have been outlined. The proposals will be formally consulted on early next year but comments from participants are encouraged now.
The SDU has collected useful information and links from the Environment Agency (and others) to help you prepare your CRC annual and footprint reports in time for
the 29th July deadline. Click HERE to visit the SDU website for the guidelines and links to support options and resources.
An excellent video with two case studies demonstrating how a
sustainable NHS is better for patient care and can reduce the NHS carbon
footprint. The NHS has the largest carbon footprint in the UK.
Originally estimated at 18 million tonnes per annum, this has now risen
to 21 million tonnes because the NHS now includes other greenhouse gases
in its measurements. CLICK HERE to view on the SDU website.
This meeting is organised by the Royal Society of
Medicine Section of Nephrology and the Centre for Sustainable
