CRC update

There has been another important update to the CRC. The latest simplified guidance from the Environment Agency highlights the steps required before allowances can be surrendered at the end of July. Each of the steps depend on the earlier steps being completed and some of these may take some time so we recommend you complete this by the 16th July to allow for any delays in the system.  Take a look at the summary of steps.  

Free Carbon Literacy E-learning Resource

As part of its National Sustainable Public Procurement Programme, Defra has launched a new e-learning resource for procurement professionals. The e-learning resource has been developed in collaboration between Defra, the Department of Health, NHS organisations and the EU funded Clear About Carbon project. The FREE resource is aimed at staff in procurement and carbon management and should develop awareness and understanding of terminology and principles associated with the greenhouse effect and climate change. Visit the defra website for more info and to access the resource. Then choose unit 9 for procurement.

New Carbon video for staff induction

NHS Bournemouth and Poole has developed ‘Cutting Carbon and Improving Health’ – a 9 minute video that explains carbon and the role of the NHS in reduction, for use in staff inductions. The video is available for all Trusts to use for their staff, and is available on YouTube and Vimeo (click on the name).

Defra Conversion Factors - updated

Defra has updated its carbon conversion factors - this includes a decrease in the electricity factor for all years. This is due to a re-calculation using the international mix of supply. Since we import electricity from France and they have lower factors (much higher use of nuclear energy), this has decreased the factor for all years. Visit the defra site for more information.

Simplification proposals for CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme and Climate Change Agreements revealed

Proposals to make the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme simpler, easier and more straightforward have been outlined. The proposals will be formally consulted on early next year but comments from participants are encouraged now.

IT - improving healthcare and reducing the NHS carbon footprint (SDU Video)

An excellent video with two case studies demonstrating how a sustainable NHS is better for patient care and can reduce the NHS carbon footprint. The NHS has the largest carbon footprint in the UK. Originally estimated at 18 million tonnes per annum, this has now risen to 21 million tonnes because the NHS now includes other greenhouse gases in its measurements.
