Actively Raise Carbon Awareness at Every Level of the Organisation

‘A culture of carbonawareness and sustainability should become an integral part of working for the NHS. Particularly as a significant amount of the energy used, travel choices and goods purchased throughout the NHS is in the direct control of individual members of staff.’ This section will help with ideas of how to engage staff at all levels, and how to integrate carbon into all aspects of your organisation.

Involve your staff in actively raising carbon awareness at every level of your organisation and encourage employees to make changes to the way they travel to work and to be more efficient with resources when they are at work.

The Sustainable Development Management Plan will help to put carbon awareness on the Board’s agenda, and it is important that this will continue into the future. Including carbon reduction as a permanent agenda item will help to support all the carbon awareness and reduction work across the Trust, as well as ensuring that your Trust is meeting its legal requirements, including the CRC.

Staff

Establish a programme of Staff champions and build action on sustainability into performance management and job descriptions. Carbon reduction is the responsibility of every staff member across the organisation, not just those responsible for reporting on the data.

Awards

And don’t forget to celebrate you successes! Whether on a local level or national, there are a huge range of general and topic specific awards, including the Health and Social Care Awards, to highlight the good work across the region and nationally.
